Toeing the line between fantasy and reality Tideland leaves a bitter taste in one’s mouth. The movie is about a young girl who deals with the harsh reality of a drug addict parents by finding succour in her beheaded dolls and creepy neighbors. In a world where society fights to keep childhood carefree we witness the life of a burdened childhood.
Grotesque is the way young Jeliza Rose , played by 10-year old Jodella Ferland, deals the ugliness of drug addiction. Her young life is a mix of fixing “fixes and handling needles as her addict of a father moves deeper into the oblivion of the drugs.
With skewed camera angels and exaggerated eccentricities the movie is more a patchwork than a smooth flowing rendition. Tideland is a dark neverland where creepy and ugly topics a re dealt with less than palatably. Overall not worth the effort at all.
